The Jubilee was started in 1990 by Charles Hutchins a former high school teacher and graduate of Van Horn High as a way to get old friends back together. It was then decided to have one every five years. The 1990 Jubilee was a great start and success. The Jubilee in 1995 suffered some and had a low attendance. In 2000, it was decided to make the Jubilee everything it could and should be. A committee was formed and they worked very hard. As a result of these efforts, about 1200 people attended. It was GREAT!! In 2005 we created a website, an ENewsletter and had the Jubilee listed in every community calendar and magazine we could find. The final tally was over 1600 people signed in at the Van Horn Convention Center and Visitors Bureau. Some folks couldn’t make it into town until Saturday night for the dance, so we really don’t know how many more people attended but didn’t get the chance to sign in. During Jubilee 2005 we added photo pages to the website, and added photos of the events shortly after they happened for those who could not attend. By the time Jubilee was over we had over 10,000 visits to the website. After Jubilee 2005 we offered a photo CD with higher resolution photos of the events and that was quite popular as well.
In 2010 we are going to try to top our 2005 turn out. So make plans now to attend, if you are in contact with anyone from Van Horn let them know about the Jubilee and this website. Hope to see y’all there!
